In practice, the dorje and the bell are often held together, with the dorje in the right hand and the bell in the left. This pairing symbolises the union of wisdom (bell) and compassion (dorje). In Tibetan Buddhism, it is taught that enlightenment arises from the inseparable combination of these two aspects—wisdom without compassion is incomplete, and compassion without wisdom is ineffective.
- Dorje (Vajra)- The Dorje, also known as the vajra in Sanskrit, translates to "thunderbolt" or "diamond." It represents strength, power, and indestructibility, much like a diamond, which is one of the hardest substances. The Dorje is a symbol of the masculine principle, representing method, compassion, and skillful means in spiritual practice. Its form often includes two symmetric ends joined by a central sphere, symbolising unity and the inseparability of duality.
- Bell or Ghanta, represents the feminine principle, wisdom, and the realisation of emptiness. The sound of the bell is believed to help clear the mind and invoke spiritual awakening. In ceremonies, the bell’s ringing is meant to embody the wisdom aspect, signifying the clarity and insight necessary to achieve enlightenment.
